What unit cost really includes

Unit cost is everything one sellable item absorbs: materials, your time, packaging, and a fair share of overhead — divided by the units you can actually sell, not the units you started. Sellers who divide by the starting batch size understate cost exactly when waste is highest, which is when accuracy matters most. This calculator keeps those two counts separate on purpose.

Method and formula

Total batch cost = materials + (labour hours x hourly rate) + packaging + overhead. Sellable units = batch quantity x (1 - waste percent / 100). Unit cost = total batch cost / sellable units. No marketplace fee is applied here: fees depend on the selling price, which you have not set yet. That separation is deliberate — cost first, price second, profit third.

Worked examples

Example 1 costs a 50-unit batch at $240 with 10% waste, leaving 45 sellable units at $5.33 each. Example 2 costs a 40-unit batch at $100 with no waste, giving $2.50 per unit. Both examples are verified by the build validator, which recomputes them from the raw inputs rather than trusting the numbers printed here.

Assumptions and limits

Labour is only as honest as the hourly rate you enter; valuing your time at zero makes every batch look profitable and hides the real cost of making. Overhead is an allocation choice, not a measured fact — pick a consistent rule (for example, a fixed amount per batch) and apply it the same way every time, or batch comparisons will mislead you.

From unit cost to price

Once you know unit cost, feed it into the pricing calculator as the product cost and set a target profit or margin; the pricing tool then adds the marketplace fees on top. If the resulting price looks uncompetitive, the honest fixes are cheaper inputs, less waste, or a bigger batch — not a lower hourly rate on paper.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cost assumptions

  • This page computes unit cost ONLY. It does not set a price, apply marketplace fees, or compute profit — use the pricing and profit calculators for those steps, so this tool never duplicates them.
  • Sellable units = batch quantity x (1 - waste percent / 100). Waste units carry their share of batch cost, which is why unit cost rises as waste rises.
  • Labour is valued at the hourly rate you enter; overhead is whatever share of studio and equipment cost you assign to this batch.

No marketplace fees are applied on this page: it computes unit cost only. When you feed the unit cost into the pricing or profit calculators, those tools apply the US Etsy Payments fee profile, verified against Etsy’s official fee pages on 28 October 2026 ($0.20 listing, 6.5% transaction, 3% + $0.25 processing, Offsite Ads 15%/12% capped at $100 per order).
