Etsy Handmade Product Pricing Calculator

Materials cost is only part of pricing a handmade item — your time is a real cost too. Enter how long an item takes and what you want to pay yourself per hour, and find the price that actually covers both.

Materials, time, and wage

What you want to pay yourself for your time — this is added as profit, not deducted as a cost twice.

Optional — profit beyond paying yourself for the hours, e.g. to reinvest in the business.

Total costs

Estimated based on the assumptions you entered. Your actual fees may vary based on your Etsy account, country, payment setup, advertising participation, and transaction details.

How this calculation works

This is a reverse calculation — it solves for the price, the same way the Pricing Calculator's target-profit mode does. The target profit here is built from two pieces: your time × your desired hourly wage, plus any extra profit goal you set on top. That combined number becomes the target profit, and the required price is solved from there — materials, packaging, shipping, and Etsy's fees are all subtracted first, exactly as in every other Sellarithm calculator.

Your wage is not also entered as a separate labor cost — it's the profit target itself. Counting it both ways would silently double it.

Margin vs. markup — not the same number

The "Resulting profit margin" shown here is profit ÷ revenue (what you keep out of what the sale brought in) — not markup, which is profit ÷ cost (what you added on top of what it cost you). For the same sale, markup is always a larger percentage than margin, and mixing the two up is one of the most common handmade pricing mistakes. This calculator only ever computes and displays margin.

Fee assumptions

  • $0.20 listing fee, charged per unit sold
  • 6.5% transaction fee on your item price + shipping charged
  • 3% + $0.25 payment processing fee (US Etsy Payments account)
  • Optional: 15% Offsite Ads fee (12% for shops with $10,000+ in trailing-12-month sales), capped at $100 per order, only if you mark a sale as ad-attributed

Example calculation

$6 materials, $0.50 packaging, $5 shipping charged, $6 actual shipping cost. 45 minutes of work, $20/hr desired wage, $5 extra profit goal.

Your wage (0.75 hrs × $20/hr)$15.00
Extra profit goal$5.00
Target profit$20.00
Required selling price$31.41
Resulting profit margin~54.9%
Effective pay per hour~$26.67/hr

Effective pay per hour comes out higher than the $20 wage you set, because it also folds in the $5 extra profit goal across the same 0.75 hours — it's a result, not an input.
